We all love the feel of fabric because it’s so silky soft and cozy! Sewing with the Minky fabric for some of my friends has been more of a horror story instead of the warm and fuzzy feeling you get from the Minky fabric. Have you heard some Minky horror stories too? Well, I figured how you can avoid those horror stories in 6 easy steps. (Warning: If you don’t follow these steps you are taking a chance of throwing that project in a drawer never to be seen again, or better yet, the project may end up in the trash!)
So here’s how to take control and create beautiful cozy projects!
Until yesterday, I never found it necessary to use Minky fabric in any of my projects! My husband purchased a Minky blanket and wanted me to cut it in half for seating in his man-cave! I must admit after hearing the horror stories I was afraid to cut the blanket and wanted to make sure that I cut it correctly, without it slipping and sliding on my cutting mat. Some people say you should use a rotary cutter, but my fabric scissors worked well for the initial cut.
Once I got up the nerve, I made a straight cut. The sewing, clean-up, and hand-stitching the small openings I used to turn the blankets to the right side took less than an hour.
Here are the six steps that you can take to avoid disappointment and frustration!
- Use a leather sewing needle-this pierces through the fabric and the other layers you’ve attached to the Minky fabric with ease.
- Use a knit presser foot to help keep the Minky fabric from sliding and bunching.
- Use a 4.0 sewing tension to keep your stitches and the fabric from bunching, and to eliminate bobbin issues.
- Use extra pins to keep your layers together — Use 1 inch seam
- Now you can use your rotary cutter to trim the edges.
- Turn to right side, pin and hand stitch opening closed
That was painless and the project will move along quickly and as smooth as butter!

I sure could have used this 4 months ago! Good to know about the leather needle and the knit foot. My attempt with the walking foot was no bueno. lol
