Monkey Business- Crochet Blanket Tutorial with Crochet Monkey Applique

I’ve been monkeying around with a crochet monkey applique. Some of you are interested in the techniques I use to create my crochet blankets and crochet appliques’.  So I decided to make a general tutorial of this Toddler size blanket (53 inches wide x 46 inches length) and I included a photo video of the applique process.

Now you can recreate this adorable look!

Supplies:

  • Crochet needle 6.0mm

  • Large eye sewing needle

Red Heart Super Saver Yarn

  • Petal Pink

  • Coffee

  • Buff

  • Black

1.  Make your chain stitch 41 inches long. There are five pink and four brown color blocks.  Color block are two rows of double crochet stitches, four rows of treble crochet stitches, and two rows of double crochet stitches.  Change yarn color and repeat.

2. Crochet border: add two rows of double crochet stitches and four double crochet stitches on each corner. On the next row apply a treble crochet stitch and two chain stitches in every other open stitch. Each corner will have four treble crochet stitches. I’ve inserted a ribbon through the openings  here, but it looks great without it.

3. On the last row of the border apply three treble stitches over the chain stitches from the previous row with two chain stitches around the border.  Each corner will have four treble crochet stitches. This will create a ruffle look.

4. Monkey applique:  I found it easiest to make circles for the head, face, ears, eyes and bottom half of the face.

Here’s a quick photo video of the process: The video will not play properly on a mobile device.

Let’s get started on the applique:

  • Head: Chain three and connect circle with treble crochet stitches inside the circle. 1st row add two treble crochet stitches in each opening , 2nd & 3rd row double crochet stitch , 4th row add two treble crochet stitch in each opening, 5th & 6th row double crochet stitch and the last row add two treble crochet stitches in each opening.

  • Ears: Chain three and connect circle with treble crochet stitches to create circle.  Add two treble crochet stitches in each opening half way around circle and add one row of double crochet to complete the circle.  Add one row of two treble crochet stitches following the circle pattern and one row of double crochet to complete a straight edge.

  • Inner ear: Chain three and connect circle with treble crochet stitches.  Add two rows of double crochet stitches to finish.

  • Eye circles:  Chain three and connect circle with treble crochet stitches to create circle. Add one row of two treble crochet stitches in each opening to finish circle.

  • Center Nose bridge: Chain 10 and add  one row of double crochet and circle around to the opposite side of the chain to complete.

  • Bottom half of face overlay: Chain three and connect circle with treble crochet stitches.  Add two rows of double crochet stitches around circle.  On half of the circle add two rows of double crochet stitches.

  • Smile. chain 14 stitches

  • Hair bow: Chain 13 and add four rows of double crochet stitches to complete.  Tie a ribbon around the center of the piece to pinch the center of the bow .

  • Hair:  Unwind 10 inches of yarn to use as your guide for four strands.  Fold the strands in half to knot at the head and trim the strands to the desired length.  Repeat six times.  Unravel some of the yarn to give it a full look.

5. Hand sew the eyes to the nose bride and attach the bottom half of the face overlay with the same color yarn.

6. Hand sew with black yarn the eye pupils, nose and attach smile.  Hand sew the face overlay to the head and the inner ears to the ear.  Attach the ears to the head, and the bow using the same method.

7. Hand sew the face onto the blanket and you’re done!

Save this or pin it for later!

Stay tuned there’s more to come from LaCartera!
