The Structured Bag -Hit or Miss? Fab or Drab?

Hello, handbag junkies! I hope all are safe from Hurrican Dorian and you follow the authorities instructions if you are in its projected path.

I’ve been updating my favorite tote bags and found some inspiration from the minimalist trend. The sleek look with a bit of structure is the direction I’m heading. As most of you know, I love to mix colors and textiles to create a different look. This time I decided to keep the outside of the bag classic and have the party on the inside!

I had fun with the grandkids this weekend and they passed their colds to me. Needless to say, I scheduled this post on Sunday, so If you don’t see the finished lining photo’s I’m still sick. 😦

Here’s a look at the Structured Bag: What do you think? Is it a Hit or Miss? Fab or Drab?

I focused on the bottom of the bag to make sure it was firm and can withstand our heavy loads. I reinforced the bottom with extra firm interfacing stabilizer. I also added feet to the bottom of the bag for style and to stop any scuffs.

Since I’m not a fan of purse or tote bag straps pulling away from a bag, I stitched to the straps to the bag panels in different areas and I added rivets to help reinforce the straps.

I adore the sew-in magnetic snaps and decided to use them as a closure. I think it makes it easier to open and close a bag. I’ve never used them before, but I thought this would be a perfect time. Well, I noticed that the thick faux leather is too thick and wouldn’t allow the magnets to snap close. After long contemplation, I realized that adding the sew-in magnets to the lining would be a better option.

I think I bought the wrong strength of magnets since they still won’t snap together. I haven’t given up on them yet. I try to incorporate them in my next project, but I’m disappointed.

I’ve added my favorite slip pocket.

I also added a welted zipper pocket to give you at least one hidden section.

So what do you think? Is this structured bag prototype a hit or miss? Fab or Drab?

I think it’s a hit! Color combo is pretty great and you’re right to reinforce the straps. Can definitely be an issue in larger bags! Hope you’re all mended up and rid of the sickness!
