The Latest Thread-Sewing & Designs

This week I’m sharing the Simplicity NewLook dress pattern results, and the weekly Spoonflower design Challenge entry.

LaCartera Kids

Well I think it has been at least 20 yrs. since I’ve used a sewing pattern, but I thought I would give it a try for this little dress.  I did make a couple of minor modifications and mixed it up a bit with my fabric choices, but I think it was worth it!

This winter dress is for my little lady! Luckily, I had just enough corduroy fabric for this little dress and I found some coordinating fabric in my stash as well. I hope to get this dress along with one other in the mail before the end of the week.

Here’s a look at the front of the dress:

The back of the dress was a little tricky with the thick corduroy fabric.  The pattern called for buttons, but my machine didn’t want to make the button holes, because of the thickness of the fabric. I decided to use my heavy duty snaps instead, but that definitely wasn’t an easy fix either.  The snaps I have on hand are all bright and shinny silver. So I thought I could cover the snaps with fabric using my trusty Mod Podge.  After a day of drying time, I realized that the fabric was too dense for the snap closures.  So plan “C” was in full effect!  I roughed up the snap covers with a fingernail file, before I added my purple acrylic paint.  It worked, but you have to wait several hours to add another coat of paint.  All in all, I’m so happy with the coordinated look of the snaps with the dress!

I hope it fits properly…Figures crossed!

Spoonflower Design Challenge

Last week I entered the Rockabilly Spoonflower Design Challenge . Rockabilly… “Originally from the 1950s, the iconic genre has a strong following that has withstood the test of time” We were asked to channel the rockabilly style “with themes centered around vintage tattoos, pin-up girls, polka dots and even skulls.” Click here to see more…

My mind quickly raced to polka dots, but how can you add a twist to polka dots?  Of course if there’s a will there’s a way! I think I added a modern twist to the challenge in my own little way.  I really love these challenges, because they inspire so much creativity! By Spring,  I’ll have a whole new line of textiles to choose from in my Spoonflower shop after entering all of the weekly challenges!
