Sewing Tip: Quick fix & No Seam Ripper Needed

My first epic sewing failure in 2016 & my 2 step quick fix!

As I’m in the happy sewing zone looking at the crisp curves and edges I just finished on the sling bag flap, I noticed that there’s something wrong with this flap!  After pressing the seams I see what happened. Do you see the mistake?

Well, the magnetic snap is on the front of the flap and that’s definitely not where it belongs. As panic sets in… I’m thinking that there is no way that I’m going to pull out the seam ripper! The number one reason is because the front panel would be trash and I only have a limited amount of  fabric to make another sling bag.  By the way I doubled stitched around the flap and I was determined to figure out how to fix this problem without a seam ripper. And I was able to pull it off this amazing trick!

Quick Fix:

1.) Cut another front panel to sew over the existing panel to create a triple layered effect with the lining showing around the edges.  I pressed the hem edges 1/2 inch around the flap to ensure that it would create a perfect overlay and sewed over the existing stitches.

2.) I had to add another piece of interfacing to cover the back of the magnetic snap to protect wear and tear on the fabric especially when opening the flap. I was so excited about the quick fix that I closed the flap and realized that I could feel the backing of the magnetic snap, so I had to remove a couple of stitches, but you wont run into that problem.

3.) Now the front panel looks perfect!

I posted this problem on Google + and Cheryl had a great suggestion here…
