I recently started a Helpful Sewing Tip page. I wanted to reach out to everyone, because I think it would be great if the sewing community would share their tips and sewing product reviews. This would also be a great chance to learn from one another.

I will feature one submission weekly. When you submit your post you are authorizing me to post one of your pictures and a few sentences from your blog post, which will link directly to your blog.

What a great idea for a post series. I love to sew and have been for many years. The only tip that comes to mind right now is one my mom taught me. She was a great believer in hand-basting with thread and took the time to do that step for almost everything. It showed in the finished results she got, expert finish every time. I do admit that I pin baste only at times though. 😉

I found a fabric warehouse near me, almost everything is about half the price I’d find at the local chain. So that might be a good tip.

I come from many, many generations of seamstresses and have a degree in Fashion Design. I’ve learned from so many seamstresses, tailors, and pattern makers that it’s hard to pick one tip, so I’m going to pick the tip that every single one of those ladies/gentleman shared with me. Learn to press and have the basic pressing tools (tailor’s ham, sleeve board, tailor’s sausage, collar press). Also, a good quality iron makes a difference. Press every seam open on both sides and don’t rush. Take your time with this and everything else will come together better.

I did come up with another tip, while I was sewing on sew-through buttons on the weekend.
After a couple of times through the button holes with thread, go underneath the button and wind the thread around a few times to form a thread shank. Easier to use the buttons and makes the buttons stay on better too. Hope this helps. :<)
